How many of you identify as atheist Jews? I do myself although I tend to put way more emphasis on the Judaism and way less on the atheism. This is very common in the Jewish community yet it seems to perplex people from goyish backgrounds

I converted to Judaism when I lived in NYC but consider myself an agnostic. More of a spiritual humanist.

Consider this joke as I think it explains what I'm getting at:

Two Rabbis argued late into the night about the existence of God, and, using strong arguments from the scriptures, ended up indisputably disproving His existence. The next day, one Rabbi was surprised to see the other walking into the shul for morning services.

"I thought we had agreed there was no God," he said.

"Yes, what does that have to do with it?" replied the other.

Also remember that Israel means "struggles with god" and that Jewish practice often embraces and encourages contradiction and questioning. Our definition of God is loose and simplistic and the religion is centered more around study, ethics and practice than on belief.

I was brought up Jewish and I definitely do not believe in a supreme being.

thought provoking, thank you for contributing to the discussion

Isn't one of the tenets that you cannot know the nature of god? I always found that a reasonable assumption.

I imagine I'm precisely what you're talking about, I'm Jewish, yet I don't believe in the existence of god, therefore I am a Jewish atheist. As a matter of fact, I'm also involved with historical reenactment, in my case I'm part of a group who reenact 9th century Viking, which is why I usually describe myself as a Jewish atheist with pagan tendencies!

I was brought up Catholic, married a Jewish man, converted, divorced 12 years ago, I'm pretty much agnostic. Dont trust any religion. . They're all in it for the money.

I would really disagree with you. Judaism is about ethics, study and practice. Money is not the end of Judaism nor would I think it fair to say that all religions are in it for the money

There is a culture that is distinct from the faith.

Many Jews live in the same neighborhoods, like to socialize, whether they belong to a temple or not.

I guess I mean this in a different way beyond just being ethnically Jewish. In addition to being ethnically Jewish I am a practicing Jew and an atheist and people seem to think those two things can't coexist in a person's life.
