Today's Republican Party is a rejuvenated Know Nothing Party dredged up from the dust bins of discredited history. The Know Nothing Party came into being in the early 1800s with a sole focus of being anti-immigration and reached some prominence, but faded quickly. If today's Republicans continue their Know Nothing stance, let's hope that it suffers a similar fate.

I can't even get into that conversation-it bothers me so. what I can say is that the party system leaves a lot to be desired, and I'm wondering if there is a better way. Like a system that allows all candidates to run and allows the entire population to vote and choose-rather than each party choosing one person for all of us.

Our political system certainly needs improvement. We need to get big money out of politics completely and get rid of all PACs. I really believe that there also needs to be "truth in advertising" legislation in relation to political campaigns. We, the people, also need to tell politicians that we want to hear exactly what they plan to do, instead of their smear and hate campaigns.

The Know Nothing movement was primarily anti-Catholic, xenophobic and hostile to immigration, starting originally as a secret society.
The name "Know Nothing" originated in the semi-secret organization of the party. When a member was asked about his activities, he was supposed to reply "I know nothing". Outsiders called them "Know Nothings" and the name stuck.
This fits Trump very well...he knows nothing about effective governance.

Let the Republican Party die before midterms

Or let the mid-terms finish them off.

Indeed! In terms of science, statesmanship, security, society, schooling, sense, and sensibility, these scoundrels know jack s**t!

they certainly have learned the art of cheating and taking bribes and not much on governing or co operating

The new Republican motto is "if you can't beat'em, cheat'em".

Considering the number of them that get caught... if they have really mastered it I'm honestly terrified to find out just how many follow through without detection.

I'm not sure the Republican Party will come through this intact. Registered independents are now a larger group than either party. Maybe we will end up with 3 or 4 legitimate party's in the near future.

I actually like that idea no one can then work alone they need to co operate and work together

@whiskywoman Hopefully.

Multiple parties is fine but we need instant run-off elections, where people can vote for their favorite candidates rather than having to vote for the lesser of two evils.

@Flyingsaucesir We have that. It is called the primaries. Just because you don't like one of two candidates doesn't mean other people feel the same. You can write in anyone you choose.
