There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
~ John Rogers
I give kudos to anyone who actually finished reading, 'Atlas Shrugged', I couldn't read it past 100 pages, too much bullshit.
Surely we can add a few other impactful series, Harry Potter or even Jules Verne? These days I enjoy the movies more than the books, probably a sign of advancing age.
I have to admit I never heard of Atlas Shrugged when I was young, it completely passed me by, whereas an older friend did point me at the Lord of the Rings when i was 14.
I could never get into Harry Potter. Books, or movies. I still wonder what all the fuss was about.
An extra thumbs up because Rogers describes perfectly the future I faced after being traumatized by Atlas Shrugged. Fortunately I snapped out of if pretty quickly. And then rescued a friend from the clutches of Libertarianisn.
Good on you!
Friends don’t let friends become Libertarian. I just can’t even, with that Ayn Rand nonsense.
I read the original Gulliver's Travels when I was eight years old-WAY too young for such vicious juvenalian satire, and it soured my entire view of the human race. Now, for instance, whenever I observe boorish, sexual predator political leaders, I only see the Yahoos.
I already preferred the company of horses to most people.
