I thought this was suppose to be a community of like-minded people. So why are many calling others beliefs stupid? We are, for the most part, in agreement that organized religion is false. So why are we calling out small differences in our beliefs? None of us are going to be the exact same. So why are we expecting our beliefs to be the same? I believe in a Karma like force, some people believe in reincarnation, some believe in ghost, some believe in the flying Spaghetti Monster! So why call the belief stupid? Of you can't say something nice, or constructive, why bother to say anything at all?
If you chose to ask a question why would you be upset by the answers. We are supposed to be big boys and girls and not afraid of someone disagreeing with you.
Unfortunately some either don't know how, or lack interest in expressing their dissent respectfully. As a child, my grandfather used to tell me to have thick skin, and not to let every needle poke me. Some use sarcasm, witty humor, and various other ways to make their point; try to take it all in stride, and just consider it "their style" (unless you find it personally offensive). Lastly, try to keep in mind that both ignorance and intelligence are ubiquitous, but civility is partially measured by our personal threshold
While I am not here to call others names, I certainly won't sit by as people proclaim nonsense such as homeopathy, space aliens, astrology, pro Orange Nazi Trump, anti LGBT, and conspiracy theories. We may all be agnostics and atheists, but some of us have not used a logical process and applied it to all aspects of our lives. If I am proved wrong about something, as a skeptic, I will accept that. We should all be willing to learn until the day we die.
If done respectfully I don't mind one bit when someone says Paul, you're proposal is stupid, or that belief you have is stupid. We all hold stupid beliefs, but here is the punch, if you're calling an idea of mine stupid, back it up with evidence showing me why my view of something is stupid or if evidence isn't possible then show me the failure in my logic. Allow me to demonstrate this to you. You have a belief that I hold to be "stupid" although I would rather use the word unjustified. If this belief makes you feel better then I'm happy for you, but it is important to me that I'm not believing things that are untrue and here is why I think Karma is likely an irrational belief. Karma is a cosmic accounting of good and bad. Belief in this would suggest that the more good we do, the more good we get in return, and vice versa. There is no evidence to support this, and it is a superstitious belief. Based on the lack of evidence you would need to believe this on faith. The evidence that show's that is not true is all over the place. A healthy child is about to be born but an umbilical cord gets wrapped around its throat, and it suffocates to death. Where is the karmic force that should prevent that?
I haven't either. I accepted that she had seen some post that I had missed. People have disagreed many times with my posts but not once have I ever been offended and on a few occasions I have changed my mind on something or learned something I had not known. If I remember correctly, you have done that for me on at least one occasion, and I'm better off for it.
