How do you deal with telemarketers? I got on some sort of list and they are bad. Probably mentioned this befor on here, but it annoys the fuck out of me! I'm on the donotcall.gov site. I've had it happen many times where there is a familiar area code, and think it is someone I know. Lots of times I don't get to my phone in time. I call back, and the number is already disconnected!

Maybe this is what this song is about. lol

As others have stated - DO NOT EVER answer unknown calls and NEVER call the number back. Asking a criminal telemarketer to "put you on their do not call" list is an absurd notion; these criminals are already breaking the law by calling you - it won't happen! Do not have ANY interaction with telemarketers and DO NOT "press 1 to be removed" from their call list. By calling the number back or pressing 1 (or any other number,) you confirm to the telemarketer that you have a "live" working phone number - a number that can be sold to other telemarketers! You have voice mail and/or an answer machine - use it! Legitimate businesses/callers will will always leave a message. The Do Not Call List was designed for legitimate businesses to check BEFORE calling you. The irony is that now days, legitimate businesses generally never call their customers. If you receive repeated calls from telemarketers, you can report the number(s) to the Fed Gov Do Not Call List. They will investigate the calling number but 99.999% of the telemarketers use spoofed numbers. Spoofed numbers cannot be traced and criminal telemarketers change numbers often. Purchase a call blocking device (for land lines,) if you can. There are a number of blocking apps for cell phones. Most modern cell phones have blockers already built in. You can report the telemarketer calls to 800NOTES.com. This is a free service that allows victims of TM calls to report their experience. I report all TM calls to 800NOTES.

I just don’t answer the phone. About 95% of the time.

Me neither. If I do answer and hear a robot voice, I immediately disconnect.

2

I buy everything they offer, hang on every word and ask if there is anyway I can send even more money.

I'm not that patient. lol

I’ve been on the Do Not Call list forever but have recently seen an uptick in robocalls. I sincerely think telemarketers don’t care anymore as they know the current administration won’t likely prosecute. Sigh.

PenLOP Level 7 June 27, 2018

Robocalls for solicitation in the US is illegal. You can sue them.

@TheGreatShadow Exactly WHO are you going to sue???

@jetames The company. The FTC can find out who called.

@TheGreatShadow A Great thought there Great - but highly unlikely. Criminal scammers are acutely aware of the federal laws they are violating and will never divulge exactly who they are. Additionally, they are most likely calling you from a spoofed telephone number. If they are calling your land line, consider a blocking device. I prefer the Digitone Blocker (Amazon, $79.95, blocks 1,000 numbers, partial numbers or complete area codes) and I have tried others. Digitone rocks - BTW, I have no relationship with DT other than being a very satisfied customer.

I recently had one shout at me on the phone because I didn't let him finish his script. I usually just say no thank you and hang up

It's pretty bad when I answer the phone saying "yes". Then they say whatever, then I ask "is this a solicitation call" (I've had to explain several times what a solicitation call is), then ask to be put on their do not call list.

1

I simply put the phone down and let them keep talking until they finally realize there's nobody listening. Waste their time.

I've done that. lol

I deal with them with much less patience than I used to. If I don't know the caller, I typically don't answer the phone, but every once in a while, the number will look "legit," and I'll answer. The last time this happened and it was a telemarketer I was rude, probably for the first time ever. I just said, "I don't want to talk to you right now." LOL! Immediate hang-up on the other end.

Yeah, they TRICK you into thinking it's a number you know. If the worst you said was "I don't want to talk to you right now.", then you won't want to hear what I said to the last one. lol It is very hard to make me mad, but enough is enough.

1

My land line has been handled by the answering machine. You would think by now they would give up, right? Boy they are persistent. They keep calling all the same, they just don't even bother to say a word to leave a message. They know but they let it ring to trigger the answering machine anyway. At least I don't have to deal with them at all and it's easy and quick to clean empty messages.

2

I mess with them if I'm in the mood to or I tell them it's a recorded line and start asking them questions, usually they'll put me on a do not call list themselves because of it.

It's easier to just yell at them. lol Or, just say "yes" to every question!

@TheGreatShadow I tried yelling once and the guy started yelling back at me. It became a serious fight to see who could yell the longest and loudest

@Gypsy31771 Worst thing is when you yell, or say "put me on your do not call list" they keep on talking faster. The last one was about a student loan. I never had one. Called her every name in the book, and I had to hang up on her! WTF?

@TheGreatShadow the ones I get the most of are about the warranty on my car running out. My car is 12 years old, I promise the warranty ran out a long time ago but I'll sit there and argue with them over details. They always start out with a description of my car and never get it right, so I correct them, they say it again so I correct them. I won't do anything but correct what they're saying, gets on their last nerve and they eventually hang up.

@Gypsy31771 I had one once that said they could lower my morgage. I was living in an apartment at the time. I said "yeah I'm interested, but you have to buy me a house first". End of conversation. Just hung up on me. No I'm sorry or anything. Prick. lol

Put a bot killer on your phone

when a telemarketer calls me I get hot and perverted with them each and every time and they learn to quit calling me LOL

1

If you are not in my contacts I don’t answer. I am so bored with them.

1

I try to be nice to telemarketers. Most of them are just low wage workers who are just trying to earn a living. If I can get my claws in to one of their bosses though? That's a whole different can o' whoop ass.

I've tried that. Doesn't work. I understand your altruism, but it's like a water drip torture. One or two drops doesn't bother you. However, after a while it will make you go mad! I know how it sucks to live on min wage. They could get a job at a gas station, or fast food joint... Not dogging on anyone that has a job. But, yes, it's the uppers that push them.

Download a block app like black list. When they call just answer and set the phone down. Sign up for the [donotcall.gov]. Tell them they have the wrong number. Call their bluff and tell them you know they are calling from Africa. Can do like I do and ask them as many stupid questions as they can handle, they will eventually call you a name and hang up. You can try the heavy breathing technique. Tell them that you charge 1500$ a minute to waste your time. I had heard a news report that said if you tell them that you get 1500$ a minute to listen to their spiel they can be billed for that.

azzow2 Level 9 June 26, 2018

I already mentioned donotcall.gov. I've even went to the site and reported calls. They won't give you any info about the process. However, the "I'm in Africa" is a good one! Wonder if I can get $1500/min. lol Thanks mate! I'll have to use that!!!

I usually hang up.

They'll just call back! Tried that.

@TheGreatShadow
If they call back I usually get creative, any where from; the person you are trying to call is dead, mutter incoherently or listen to the whole thing then try to sell them something better at a cheaper price. Then of they call again I cuss them out, with extream anger, than sweetly tell them to have a great night.

@SeanNock I guess if you're really bored... I do that sometimes. Just got another! Robocall (illegal) for solicitations. Left a message saying it will be reported to the FTC. Just did that.

@TheGreatShadow
Hopefully that will stop them

In the unfortunate event that a telemarketer gets through to me I will engage them in meaningless, trivial conversation. I try to keep them on the line as long as I can. I figure I am helping out some other poor fool from getting an unwanted phone call. I do it for all of you. You are welcome.
...unless I am in a foul mood.

I registered my number in a "Do not call list".....it works pretty well. For those numbers that reach me.......I don't answer the calls and I block them.
