Those of you who are of a certain age (ahem), who grew up in the United States, I'd like to know which of the following early TV children's hosts you liked: Fran Allison (from "Kukla, Fran and Ollie"; Miss Frances (from "Ding Dong School" ); Pinky Lee ("The Pinky Lee Show" ); Andy Devine ("Andy's Gang" . . . With Froggy the Gremlin); Buffalo Bob Smith (from "Howdy Doody" ), and Shari Lewis (The Shari Lewis Show" . . . With the puppet, Lambchop). Whom did I forget? P.S. Gotta mention Soupy Sales, although he happened upon the NY scene when I was a bit older (16).
Maybe a few years later, not sure.
Perhaps the first show intended for kids that had a bit of edgy humor to it.
That snark was brought to its full glory in Pee Wee's Playhouse.
But first there was this ----
Fran Allison, Andy Devine ( twang your magic twanger froggie), Howdy Doody.
I loved Pinky Lee (who was on TV when I was quite small), and Soupy Sales (I was 12 when his program was on TV, and he was VERY popular with my classmates). I thought Andy Devine was creepy.
My first crush was Mr. Green Jeans from Capt. Kangaroo. That's a decade later, maybe!
I remember bits of some of those shows. I was pretty young to remember much about most of them but Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody were around for a good while. Shari Lewis a bit later. But what about Cap'n. Kangaroo? -- We also had a couple of good local shows here in southeast Texas.
My favorites were Cadet Don and the Kitrick show. They were regional shows out of Houston, Texas.
I live in Beaumont. If atmospheric conditions were just right I would be able to get a fuzzy view of Cadet Don's show and, if I was really lucky, got to see Kitrick. She was nice to see.
