How often do you watch movies or read books that express a nuanced opinion about religion?

If you're like me, not often enough. I gravitate towards films or books that agree unequivocally with me. I need to make a conscious effort to seek out intelligent expressions of opposing views. On reflection I realise that this is also true (though less so) on subjects other than religion (history, politics, literature).

Last night I watched a movie called Calvary, about the Catholic Church. I would be interested in the comments of anybody else who has seen it.

I've been bombarded with religion's message for too long. It's all nonsense. So I refuse to spend any more of my precious time humouring it.

I don't have a television and I don't watch films, which feels like a luxury.

I haven't seen it the last time I watched an expressly religious film was years ago when my Grandmother wanted to see Amazing grace.

My favourite movies are Horror and you would be surprised how many movies about demons end up being very pro religion.

I enjoy movies or documentaries and read books about religion or history, up until things start becoming clearly untrue and they gain a propaganda slant, then that's it. It is hard to watch or read history without religion being present. What to me is important is if it is portrayed realistically. If I am unsure I look things up.

I need no validation. Not looking for a savior or messiah.

Its hard to have or find a nuanced argument about religion, particularly when I have a strong bias in that I have decided the issue already. The best take on religion that I have seen was as it is portrayed in Deep Space Nine (Star Trek). More often then not I am annoyed by ham fisted attempts to put a religious signal in the story. As an example I remember watching an episode of the new Star Trek (Discovery) where one of the characters said that if x happened thousands of "souls" would be "destroyed". I was irritated because as some one who was formerly religious (and even if I wasn't) it is a given that souls can't be destroyed (except by God). So this statement was not only awkward, but wrong (unless the klingons have a soul destroying cannon in addition to cloaking). They do it because they want to make the thing more appealing to the religious. At least that is the only explanation I have for it.
Well after that tangent I guess I have just this to add. What kind of nuanced discussion can be had if you have already made up your mind on the issue?

I watch TV at home with my wife. If she wants to watch something with religion in it I don't say to much. Shes still a Christian in a since. Afraid to say agnostic yet...

I really don't care if a movie, or book might have religious themes. to me, a well written script or book is something I rather enjoy. For example, I really enjoyed the movie Constantine. Yes it had a whole bunch of biblical settings. Even so I felt it to be very entertaining.

I don't mind the religious minded views at all, really.

And I still find the 23rd psalm profoundly beautiful and comforting even as I logically know it is horse shit.

I do occasionally, but hearing opposing views is just the same old dogmatic nonsense that I have heard all my life. If anyone had anything new to bring to the topic it might be different. It is pretty much "the bible says" and that is all they have to offer. I would enjoy hearing something new.

I avoid religious topics and just watch movies that appeal to me..historical docudramas, sci-fi, family comedies, LGBTQ movies, etc.
