"Humanists try to behave decently and honorably without any expectation of rewards or punishments in an afterlife. The creator of the universe has been unknown to us so far. We serve as well as we can to the highest abstraction of which we have some understanding, which is our community."
This puts his "creator" reference a bit in context.
He assumes there was a creator of the Universe - there wasnt.
Kurt has used such language to make a point. In his eulogy for Isaac Asimov, he joked that, "he must be in heaven now."
The true test of "morality" is what we do when no reward is offered, and/or it creates personal discomfort for us. That's why we never use "thoughts and prayers." It's imperative for us that help is proffered.
"If it is to be, it's up to me."
And...
"Hands that help are better than lips that pray."
