Dr Dan Siegel defined the mind as "an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information within us and between us" . I believe this is an incredibly rich definition, which has been born of a cross disciplinary alignment- from neuro-scientists, psychologists, psychiatrists,to anthropologists and more.

Fellow Agnostics, tonight I am seeking your thoughts on the impact of the social aspects of mind....
(Or feel free to render any related comment on the mind 🙂

Looking forward to your thoughts....

I've been thinking about the mind for many years, and only a few years ago I understood part of my motivation: I am on the Autism spectrum (Asperger's). People have always been a mystery to me. Before I knew I was ASD, I wanted to be a psychologist, and I studied it a bit at Uni. One thing I know with absolute certainty: there is nothing supernatural about the mind. It is entirely created by the body. There is no working theory on the origins of consciousness, yet. Things I suspect about the mind:

  1. Your ego is a figment of your imagination. It thinks that it exists, but it does not. The Buddhist idea of enlightenment, I think, is about the destruction of the ego. All other religions' ideas of the afterlife are because the ego literally cannot imagine itself not-existent.
  2. The mind exists because the human brain can run simulation models of the future. We try to predict what would happen based on cause and effect. We are very bad at this.
  3. The mind is the brain running a virtual reality simulation of the body. If you picture yourself in any situation, eg. running through a field, your sympathetic nervous system reacts dumbly as though you are actually there doing/experiencing that thing.
  4. The Theory of Mind that Neurotypical people take for granted is a complete mystery to ASD people. I can't tell what you're thinking/feeling just from your body language & tone of voice. I think maybe my brain doesn't get a very strong signal-to-noise ratio from its Mirror Neurons.

Cheers for reading!

My higher, consciously aware self sits calmly, observing the machinations of a body-based mind.

@SueZ I agree that you pose a profound thought. Our minds are certainly complex, marvelous systems. But basically what I think is that our brains are tools or instruments that help our bodies survive. Yes, the mind is more than the brain, but the mind can not exist without the brain. Now I am saying this as a rank amateur with no credentials so don’t ask for proof. This is all just my opinion.

I think of the body with it’s brain as something like a very advanced computerized robot, having sentience but no conscious awareness. As I see it, consciousness is primary in reality. It is not me the body that has consciousness as a trait. Rather, consciousness is observing and sometimes directing my body, and all other organisms simultaneously.

The body with its distinctive memory gives me my personal identity as a separate person, but that self is illusory and temporary. My (our) true self is pure consciousness itself.

Thanks for opening a portal for our amazing minds to communicate. BTW, most of my ideas originate from Hindu scriptures and I take no credit. I have published a Kindle short novel called “The Staggering Implications of the Mystery of Existence “ which you might enjoy.
