I like to think I write things out most of the time, @Ellatynemouth, and I certainly do in formal/work situations, but I sometimes have problems with my fingers manipulating keyboards (especially tiny ones on mobiles) and abbreviations make it a bit easier for me. I suspect it's a problem for a lot of people with arthritis. Of course, if "speaking" with someone who doesn't like or understand abbreviations, I try my best to write everything out.
