What does everybody think of homeopathy? Am I the only one that thinks it is crazy people will pay money of a like cures like sugar pill. A pill where the active ingredient has been diluted something like 1 to 10[27] or more. I know placebo effect works but I feel bad sometimes when I see people wasting money on these things.

Just for the record Homoeopathy has been reported in the British Medical Journal as being effective in the treatment of fibrositis (BMJ Clinical Research 299(6695):365-) The clinical trial can be found at [bmj.com]

It's insanity. Like reiki.

It's snake oil, but some people actually get a real benefit from snake oil. It's like when religion makes someone happier - annoyingly, it can actually happen.

@Matias Because English is such a great language.

Homepathy has been subjected to scorn because it is scientifically so implausible. However, repeated medical studies have not yet been able to prove that it doesn't work better than placebo;

It is a real mystery why it has been so difficult to prove that homeopathy is no better than placebo, or what the scientific basis is if it actually works (water memory?).

One tenet of homeopathy is that dilution makes it stronger. The crap is diluted to the point that it's unlikely that you'll get any of the supposed "active" ingredient in a dose.

Another tenet is that like counters like. According to that belief, a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people would cure similar symptoms in sick people.

There's nothing about homeopathy that has any validity. It's nothing more than pseudoscience.

It's fucking water.

I know people who swear by it, but personally I'm not a believer. Even if you think in terms of activation of the body's other processes, the dilutions are too extreme to have much effect.

Woo is woo, and there ought to be a law against it. Or at least a warning label.

You know what a placebo is I take it. If you think that you are being cured sometimes you will be. Most of what we go to the doctor for in time will fix itself anyway. I'm not talking about the need for antibiotics when needed. Don't be stupid about this.

No, placebos are for people whose illnesses are imagined. They don't cure real maladies.

@JimG Even real maladies can begin with psychological/psychiatric problems. Try telling someone with a stress-induced migraine that it's not 'real' and hope that you are a quick runner.

@Gareth I didn't say that any particular illness was imaginary. In the case you mentioned, even if doctor gave a placebo for symptoms, they should offer real treatment for the underlying cause. However, homeopathy is marketed as an actual treatment not as a placebo.

I think homeopathy is BS.
