Is that the one where Picard shot first?

This is probably over-thinking the question, so I apologize ahead of time.

As a geek I've heard many arguments and debates about this very topic. I think a direct comparison is unreasonable as they are two franchises that scratch two distinct entertainment itches, so which I prefer is tied directly to my mood when asked.

I will say that I have read all the post Zahn Trillogy to Vector Prime novels of the Star Wars universe and was appalled when they were taken out of cannon. I've never read any of the Star Trek novels outside of one by Anderson when I was 12(longer ago that I would like to apply a precise metric too) .

I'm going to post this that I wrote a while back

" In the realm of imaginary worlds we look to the aspect of the story that speaks to us. For example, the reason that I would say that Star Trek is “better” than Star Wars because of it stricter adherence to a scientific reality. I can already hear collective groans of Lucas fan's who would site Star Treks never ending list of “particles of the week” to get the crew of the enterprise out of trouble(I have had this discussion before), and this reason is why I say stricter adherence rather than total basis in scientific fact.

Again, as I write and analyze the two universes side by side, I find myself contemplating the fairness of comparing the realities. I would submit that Star Wars is less science fiction, more than a drama set against a science fiction back drop. The aspect that attracts me to reading material is how much I feel compelled by the characters. While I would agree that Star Trek does have some compelling characters, I would have to argue that it relies heavily on the sci-fi aspect of the universe. Star wars, on the other hand, you could easily replace space with ships on the seas, political parties on various contents vying for control, while Luke Swashbuckler uses his magical powers to help the rebel pirates.... I like that.

Star Trek is more for the scientific purist. While I agree that they take MANY liberties with the possibilities, there is always a spiders strand of reason that holds them in place. The character Q could be a counter to this argument, and I concede the point. I have also calculated the energy output of two grams of antimatter, and believe that such power could propel us to the stars. That's what Star Trek appeals to in me; is the possibilities of what could be.

At the end of this there is not much to summarize. Both fictional vehicles carry very different passengers. While I find the random and zealotry of the two camps amusing, I can't compel myself to pick a side. What I'm in the mood for at the time, is what I will experience."

At this second I'm more into story and characters, so I'm going to say Star Wars.
