I'm ready to live right here.

In many ways I am there. I would like to quit the day job though

I've pretty much done that, at least to my own satisfaction. It's not that hard to do if you don't get too fanatical about it. I'm camped close enough to civilization that I can get a dose of it when I want or need to, but am able to spend as much time as I like in peace and quiet. It's a good balance.

To quit the day job, sure. (Can't for another 17 years, unless I marry rich. Ha!) But as long as I want to have internet, I'm stuck with society. Plus, maybe we NEED something to rail against from time to time.

The noise level alone, nowadays is driving me in that direction. Throw in the crowds, traffic, high cost of living in the city, crime, etc., etc., and flight to the hinterlands appears quite tempting, indeed. I have superficially investigated expats living in, primarily, Mexico; Lake Chapala, and San Miguel de Allende, and that looks like an option worth checking out extensively. Some areas of Guatemala, too.

Another option is buying an RV, living in it and traveling when/where it suits you. Of course, being retired, I have these options, many do not.

Thing is, I adore what I do for a living, absolutely love my job, my family, friends! Just can't get rid of this need to leave everything!

Felt like I did that ..a long time ago… I’d inherited the family homestead and acreage in the deep woods of Oregon.. I well remember concluding, ‘the only way to win the game - is stop playing.’ Just too many opportunities and reasons to remain connected to the greater society … like trekking into town to attend American Atheist meetings ..after reading my AA magazine issues cover-to-cover in the safety of my mountain cabin.

But as safe and removed from society as I felt, we (young wife & self) would have suffered greatly had the Soviet’s 20 megaton airburst nuclear bomb took out my home town of Portland. And if we planned to have kids.. what kind of world would they inherit after the plague of Reagan. So I continued the fight, from the woods.

I feel the desire quite often... but i am legally blind and a bit dependent on the technology that society has to offer. The self driving cars give me hope though that maybe one day...

I’ve thought about this quite a bit, also thought about going the Buddhist monk route to leaving everything behind. But there are quite a few practical difficulties, not least medication.

yes, on the condition that I build a mad scientist lab in a cave far away from civilization... requires power, internet connection, lab coat laundry service and a slight amount of enriched plutonium... (come to think of it, just many lab coats, forget the service)

Very much so. But I like clean running water, electricity and food too much.

Maybe you just need a vacation? Don't get me wrong, I do understand.
