Does anybody here have a burning desire to ditch society, leave everything behind and go and live? It's getting stronger and every weekend I get a bit closer to doing it!
I've pretty much done that, at least to my own satisfaction. It's not that hard to do if you don't get too fanatical about it. I'm camped close enough to civilization that I can get a dose of it when I want or need to, but am able to spend as much time as I like in peace and quiet. It's a good balance.
I wonder if a monastery would accept an agnostic. I wouldn't be any trouble.
@CrazyQuilter And perhaps not say what I'm seeking?
No fucking way, then l wouldn't have anyone to make fun or a place to buy donuts.
@CrazyQuilter l don't cook, another problem. I am also a very social person.
@OlderMusicGeek Exactly. ☺
To quit the day job, sure. (Can't for another 17 years, unless I marry rich. Ha!) But as long as I want to have internet, I'm stuck with society. Plus, maybe we NEED something to rail against from time to time.
Good point, Mike, screaming at the landscape doesn't seem to help, does it?
@Condor5 doesn't work for me, no. ?
The noise level alone, nowadays is driving me in that direction. Throw in the crowds, traffic, high cost of living in the city, crime, etc., etc., and flight to the hinterlands appears quite tempting, indeed. I have superficially investigated expats living in, primarily, Mexico; Lake Chapala, and San Miguel de Allende, and that looks like an option worth checking out extensively. Some areas of Guatemala, too.
Another option is buying an RV, living in it and traveling when/where it suits you. Of course, being retired, I have these options, many do not.
@CrazyQuilter good to know, thanks.
You might look into Belize
@Condor5 I don’t tell everyone.. But thought, hey - we’re all Agtheists! The place I was considering was inland, not far from an ‘Amish’ type ..commune or compound that is apparently thriving. So why not an Agtheist Commune? Least populated central american country, and former British protectorate that speak English..
I’m currently enjoying my recent relocation to Appalachia (believe it or not) … they already hate ‘the government,’ so if it keeps disintegrating, we’ll just trade food, skins & moonshine to survive
Not even a tiny bit.
But, for several days at a time, sure!
@BlueWave where I'm living now seems to be the modified muffler capitol of the country-some very noisy cars here. It was eerily pleasurable the day after 9/11 In the regard that there were absolutely no aircraft in the air, and traffic seemed to be at a minimum. Of course, it was difficult to obtain any other pleasure at that time. It is very rare to be in an environment where there is no noise whatsoever. I experienced a sensory deprivation tank in 2016 and that was quite interesting; 2 hrs of complete and total silence while floating sans clothing in saltwater.
Much better idea.
Felt like I did that ..a long time ago… I’d inherited the family homestead and acreage in the deep woods of Oregon.. I well remember concluding, ‘the only way to win the game - is stop playing.’ Just too many opportunities and reasons to remain connected to the greater society … like trekking into town to attend American Atheist meetings ..after reading my AA magazine issues cover-to-cover in the safety of my mountain cabin.
But as safe and removed from society as I felt, we (young wife & self) would have suffered greatly had the Soviet’s 20 megaton airburst nuclear bomb took out my home town of Portland. And if we planned to have kids.. what kind of world would they inherit after the plague of Reagan. So I continued the fight, from the woods.
yes, on the condition that I build a mad scientist lab in a cave far away from civilization... requires power, internet connection, lab coat laundry service and a slight amount of enriched plutonium... (come to think of it, just many lab coats, forget the service)
Very much so. But I like clean running water, electricity and food too much.
