Ummmmmmmmm is this on the test

Perform the function just as you would with parentheses, then take the absolute value. (change a negative result to positive)

Those are absolute value lines. They mean that regardless the number derived by the mathematial operation in between the two bars, the answer will always be reported as a positive number. There is a more substantial theoretical reason for using absolute value designstion, but purposes of what the outcome is, this should suffice I hope
