The Protestant work ethic is sometimes credited with the ecconomic success of the US 20th century. There maybe some truth in that. It's true that you need a dependable labor force that shows up sober and diligently follows orders. However there would also be a boost if the 70 billion dollars of lost tax revenue from churches was spent on infrastructure improvements.
