I think it's more complicated than that. The Protestant work ethic is sometimes credited with the ecconomic success of the US 20th century. There maybe some truth in that. It's true that you need a dependable labor force that shows up sober and diligently follows orders. However there would also be a boost if the 70 billion dollars of lost tax revenue from churches was spent on infrastructure improvements.
