What is your Mantra? One of the most successful therapies of recent years is CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Apparently the technique, which tries to alter your way of thinking to something more beneficial is enhanced by using Mantras, a device used by several religious and spiritual movements. It involves repeating an important learning phrase over and over until it gets fixed in your mind - together with confirmations that the phrase is actually helping you of course.
What is your current mantra? Mine is
“ Use science in every possible situation to avoid being told what to do”
I tend to like this guided meditation:
more seriously I don't use a mantra but I do always remind myself: there is a workable solution, find it.
Yes to workable solutions!
@OpposingOpposum thank you!
"Nothing lasts, this too will pass" also I have found asking myself if I really need to associate with toxic people or can I let them go/avoid them entirely. It makes life much nicer when I do.
Ha! I just posted (almost) the same mantra.
@dkp93 Mantra twins! Lol
It does work for me though. No matter how awful a situation is, there will be an end to it. Probably be replaced with something more awful but that's neither here nor there.
Mine us the following...just to note generally I just think this and say it to myself.
Sometimes I can be heard muttering it under my breath.
On a couple of highly stressful occasions I have said it out loud over and over again..which some of my colleagues found amusing...
"KEEP IT TOGETHER!" "KEEP IT TOGETHER!"
"KEEP IT TOGETHER!" "KEEP IT TOGETHER!"
"KEEP IT TOGETHER!" "KEEP IT TOGETHER!"
Bow finger?
Yes yes Yes! That's where I saw it first! Hilarious movie..I adopted the mantra when I quit smoking..together with a lot of quick breathing excersises...?..anyway all these years and still off the cigs..
@Hitchens that’s hilarious-I’ve mumbled that to myself a few times!
Yea..don't let your boss hear you say it out loud..its kind of awkward..they think you are fishing for a pay rise.lol ?
The closest thing to a mantra that I have is "This too shall pass." I could probably use one that's a little cheerier and more inspirational
That is what I call the Mantra of Motherhood. I've used it for over 30 years.
@HippieChick58 Yes! I first started using it when I was up all night with my screaming, crying baby who is now 15. The screaming and crying eventually stopped, but I've hung onto the mantra. It's not always helpful, but sometimes it does the job.
I hear ya! but then some demons you don't want creep up on you is when the contrary is in order (grin, wink)
OH SHIT! Not again!
Yep, that's mine too.
The Mantra of Motherhood: This too shall pass, I've used it for over 30 years. My other mantra is: Everything will be OK in the end. If it isn't OK, it isn't the end. And when I make phone calls for my job my mantra is: please go to voice mail.
I am in a point in my life where I refuse therapy or cures... I will take them illnesses as they come. I will let them to slowly desecrate my body... now if I ever, ever... need Viagra, I will commence to hoard the damned thing until is misused properly!!! What will be a Rule without an exception?
Most days, I can't decide and seek inspiration. Fortunately, the internet is there to help me out.
"Use the right tool for the right job" That one sticks with me.
(Oh...first, I fully grant you your use of artistic license in your post... but, as a mental health provider, I'd like to clarify what CBT is and isn't in this post. Mantras are not part of CBT. CBT seeks to help clients to consider how thier beliefs, expectations, biases and rules about the way the world "should" work influence their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, we find that we have come into a situation where two or more of our expectations about the world are in conflict, causing emotional distress. It could also be that old rules are no longer serving us to the best potential. The realizations from this therapy, that is based in cognition (thinking), come naturally, and can be very transformative... and all the change comes from within the client... no mantras involved.)
“ If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again.” This is attributed to Robert the Bruce who was inspired by watching a spider when hiding from his enemies in a cave, on the island of Staffa. He used this mantra on his troops before the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.....they routed the English in the greatest victory in Scottish history, so it obviously worked!
This mantra is an important part of science too. Better have a revised hypothesis the next time tho'.
@Mcflewster Yes, of course that goes without saying ! Repeating exactly the same thing and expecting a different result is one of the definitions of madness!
“That’s life,” by Frank Sinatra is something I repeat when life hits me hard. Just gotta keep moving forward.
