Religion can be very cruel and used to justify anything. In the United States there was much debate about teaching Christianity to slaves. Some were of the opinion that they were simply not worthy to hear the Christian message, others thought that they couldn't be Christians as they were not really human and thus not savable, and yet others wanted to teach Christianity because it taught that slaves should obey their masters so it would keep them in line. None of these options had any thought of humanism. I am ashamed some of my countries history but even more so of the current religious bigotry.
