Looked at a few chat rooms and many are empty. is that the norm?

The funny thing is the insomniac room is always empty. you'd think that one would always be occupied ?

Yes. The Singles chat is usually populated when open, and those folks sometimes spill into Insomniacs when Singles chat closes.
