Ever have a conversation on science take a sharp turn into pseudoscience?

I was discussing planetary science with a friend recently and she mentions her husband has a degree in ufology. How would you respond?

I would ask her if she would vote for Trump again.

I enjoy reading the books by Jacques Vallee. He always has an interesting 'slant' on the whole 'UFO' phenomenon. He pissed a lot of 'Ufologists' off by suggesting that the objects and their 'occupants' are not visitors from outer space but come from some sort of fourth dimension here in our world and are the original source of much of mythology. When he went to investigate 'sightings' and 'close encounters' he also did a lot of study of the 'contactees themselves. Even if he is incorrect in his conclusions I find him to be a good entertaining 'read'

I would show her my PhD in scepticism.

I would simply ask her what accredited institution offers such a degree.

Well, you could try to tell her with a straight face that you have a master degree in X-files. I dare you ????

I would have no choice but to excuse myself and Google "ufology."
