This last Friday a friend at work invited me to go to an organization that he is a member of, this was the third time that I had gone it and he had warned me that he was going to try and sign me up to become a member. Now this organization is in a small rural city, and there was not much else for me to do, and all we did there was to play pool and darts. It was a small diversion after work. well he broke out the pamphlet and was filling it out for me. I started reading the back that had an oath or a pledge that I had to sign. This pledge asked me among other things if I was a terrorist or had committed a crime. Before this the first sentence was "I believe in a supreme being" and I don't. The people there were somewhat distraught as I supposed they expected me to sign, and eventually my friend must have told them that I was an atheist. Well the one of the high ranking members decided to lead a the nine o clock service (that was not present the last two Fridays) in silent prayer that was not silent as the members spoke aloud. I stood silently and listened a bit amused since this had to be an impromptu thing. My friend is not a bad person and nor did these people seem to be, but I feel like this is all silly. If you want to send my dues to help the children in the community why should it matter what religion or lack there of I profess to ascribe to? I wonder if Americans really believe in the ideal that they profess this country was founded on. I worry that we well all end up in our own little camps like religious sects in the past. You don't believe what I believe so our kids can't play together. I wonder which America is the real one.

Nothing at all wrong with going for the socializing, just make it clear your not interested in the religious parts.

I would like that but I feel that they will no longer let me go since I will not join. I also want to be clear this is not a religious organization, at least it is not set up to be. I feel like this was more or less a kind of way of protecting their world view from others. I think that for the most part neither they are also not interested in the religious parts. that is why it feels hypocritical to me.

@RavenMunnin yeah, if they're that controlling, better to stay clear.
