Do you think that there will always be a significant portion of humanity that will believe in the existence of god(s) or lives after death? If not, how long will it take to purge such nonsense from our species?

Your are talking about a different breed of human. Perhaps after another 100,000 years of evolution. But as long as people can imagine and fantasize, one wonders if it will ever disappear, just seems to come with the territory.

Superstitions and false premises passed along from parents to child for a hundred generations. It will continue unabated until it dies out. It will die out only when the media stops saying it's a Good Thing. They kind of feed upon each other, so I'm wondering if things will ever change. Maybe websites like this will help. We'll see. I guess it's like waiting for the Second Coming of Christ?

I wouldn't hold my breath!

Everyone needs something to believe in. Perhaps christians arent strong enough to depend solely on themselves.? I say if there such a thing as God existed, he made me strong enough to believe in myself, not need a crutch to cling to, I can think for myself and refuse to believe something just because someone says I should. I create my own moral compass and guidelines to live by without a work of fiction quoting how I should live. I don't think it will ever be purged, there are way too many sheeple. As for life after death, no one know what's gonna happen till we get there!!!!

I pretty much believe in reasoning and what science has uncovered. There are no gods in this or any universe. Your consciousness is a function of your brain, and when your brain dies, your consciousness goes with it -- to oblivion. Sorry, but that's reality. Deal with it now, because when your lights go out, you won't be able to ever again.

@GlyndonD you could very well be right, I'm sure it's a comfort to be so certain. Regardless, I always do my best to live my fullest life possible, so no matter what happens when I die, I'm satisfied.

@Shawniedawn, that's a good attitude, but many people do things and don't do things to get to a heaven or to avoid a hell. What a waste.

@GlyndonD I completely agree with you there!!!

No we'll all be dead .

I hope not. I think religion prevents us from evolving . As long as humans hold on to religion our species will have a ball and chain.

Yes, never happen

Strange.. I was genuinely thinking about that only this morning..and I came to a stark conclusion.

If an atheist can believe in ghosts: yes.

Yes, I've seen several charts suggesting that religious people are more inclined to have larger families than the non-religious. While many will experience their moment of clarity that cleaves them from their previous faith, it seems unlikely that it will ever be enough to offset birth rates among the religious.

Yes. As long as there is ignorance, there will be superstition. And ignorance will thrive when science and history are disregarded. As we see on a daily basis....

Reminds me of politics, too.

@GlyndonD yep

I think so, especially in america since we as a whole are less intelligent because we don't care about funding education. Under educated people don't question, they sheeple out. Its all control.

And consider this new wave of intentional ignorance flooding our society these days...scary.

@Freespirit64 very fucking scary...

We stupidly have the government run our schools. We need to fund students/parents instead.

There will always be irrational people. There are people today believing the Earth is flat. No new technology or social development will change those peoples minds. Their numbers might shrink so much that they won't have any significant political power anymore, but they will always exist. Our goal should be to reduce their influence by educating people.
In my view the belief in god or an afterlife is not the main issue either. I think drawing moral or political conclusions from your irrational believes is where the line should be drawn. That is what needs to be stopped the most.

Agreed by us, but when your religion says that the after life is better and eternal, they don't much care for the rules here in the exhibition season (reality). That's why the abortion issue will never go away -- they believe a spirit inhabits the embryo at conception, and it doesn't matter what scientists say about brain activity and the like.

I agree, and that is exactly what I meant by the line that should be drawn. Not caring about the rules of the reality we actually have evidence for, supporting anti-abortion regulations and many other things are the big issues here. Having a philosophical debate about a logical possibility of a god or god(s) in principle shouldn't be such a big deal. Of course, I do recognize that those things are rarely separate, especially in the USA.

No, unknown.

I believe if we ever meet an advanced alien race that they'll be able to speak of their history when religion was part of their lives. My opinion is that it's the "terrible twos" in the development of a species. Nature has laws that transcend our planet, things like the strong surviving, predators and prey, intelligence over brawn in the long run, evolution to adapt to your surroundings or dying out, fear of the unknown, and making up answers when you're more afraid than you are smart.

One day it'll go away, but I don't think it's on the horizon. The fact that some people have built new religions is my gap, I'm not even sure we're done with the new ones.

The survival instinct created the concept of spirits and lives after death, and gods to control and manage that mechanism. That instinct is so strong that I have doubts that religion will ever be extinguished.

@GlyndonD I think there's a few leaps in between "survival instinct" and "the concept of life after death." I doubt we'll see it, but I'm sure religion will go away and I have proof, find me a worshipper of Zeus. Like a lot of other things religion is just a fad, it exists at a dynasty level but still has a start and an end. Each individual religion will end and more end than start anew.

With the information age and the shrinking of our world everyone has better access to each other, can communicate and better spread ideas and thoughts and learning and that spells the end of religion. Just not soon.
