Social media and work.....has anyone had their place of employment ask their employees to post company information onto their personal social media accounts? For instance, the company I work for is asking us to copy their LinkedIn posts to our own LinkedIn profiles.

My issue with this is I work for a small consulting company that mainly works with law enforcement across the country. We also do some work with the Department of Defense. I'm pretty liberal and I have a healthy respect for law enforcement and do believe that the majority went into that line of work for noble reasons. However, I also know there is a lot of racism out there and people getting shot that shouldn't be. I'm really not comfortable posting company stuff onto my personal account.

I'm a peon here and even though we have less than 10 full time employees, I doubt anyone will notice I'm not sharing company posts. If I do get called out on it, I'm not giving in.

Just curious if anyone else has encountered something similar?

Just got another email asking us to share and article on LinkedIn. This one is about when officers should watch body cam footage after an officer involved shooting.

Unless it’s in your employment contract then no way am I going to ever do that. Just as I would not make personal posts on a companies profile. Frankly, I think it’s unprofessional of them to ask that of you.

Hey, companies don't allow access to facebook, twitter, etc. while on the clock, they don't have access to me or my sites off the clock.

My company wants personal and company separate. Nothing good will come of it. Don’t do it

Illegal to require.

Unless it's in your job description I wouldn't do it.

I would rather be poor than surrender my rights and civil liberties.

Just the opposite. We were not permitted to talk about the company we worked for. It is a medical supply company so we knew that we would not/could not talk about customers, but not permitted to say anything about the company itself.

Financial company here, and we have a similar restriction. At I've point we were even specifically told not to like or share any company posts!

This has never happened to me. If it did, I'd flat out refuse, and probably get fired.
Sounds like you're handling it WAY better than I would.
Good luck!

Guess I'm lucky to not work in an environment like that. I have a great manager (and I'm not just saying that because he's on the other side of the cubicle), but I won't invite him to be among my LinkedIn connections. There's just too much that can go wrong with blending personal and professional information on social media.

Want to talk about personal? I make one of my boss’s doctor and dental appointments. I’m on his HIPAA form at his eye doctor

No chance. Have to think that would be eligible for a wrongful dismissal suit but I am no legal expert
I think the only thing employers can do with your social media is browse it before you are hired to make a judgement call on character or whatever. Everything is yours, not theirs, to determine what is posted.

Now that doesn't mean they can't make things difficult at work but I suspect if it ever got that far you would find your way to a better fit for you anyway

Yeah they’re just encouraging us to share. I’m quietly choosing not to

After my military retirement I used to work for two real large government contractor but because in one project only customer was US Air Force and in the other the largest customer was CIA. They didn't even wanted us to say anything. I mention it now because CIA project is gone and no... I say No I was not filling up bottles for waterboarding or in charge of the hose. No. But I understand your feelings. As long you can deal clear with your peace of mind and sleep at night and the money is worth your concerns, do it until you don't want to be part of it. I walked away, never to make that much money again and never regret it. If your job involves Security Clearance plenty of other outfits always looking for Cleared individuals. You do what you have to do to be happy. Back then I turned down a constant traveling pay raise 2 year contract because being in close proximity of my GF then was more important. You are you and your circumstances, ironic she would had preferred me taking the money and see me every few months for a week. Of course no longer my GF. Good Luck.

That is so wrong!

quite the reverse when i was working though it was a local govt social work dept seems it should be your choice what goes on your public acct

No, I haven’t. It seems like no one should have the right to control what information is included on anyone else’s social media account.

I wouldn't even use my personal phone for any bussines conversation. It's like the old rap tune goes... "Gotta keep'em separated"

At times i use my personal phone for texting. To the point that our speakers have my number and I told them if they have any trouble traveling on the weekend to call me (I’m not salary). Last year they gave us $120 ($10/mo) towards our cell phone bill. They haven’t done it this year though.
