Possibly the ocean wasn't always hundreds of kilometers away. Not sure what the geology of Siberia was in the past. It could also be that they evolved separately from saltwater seals since they are a freshwater species.
The lake itself is pretty interesting. Largest freshwater lake in the world, over 5,000 feet deep and contains 22 - 23% of the worlds fresh water.
