According to Jared Diamond's excellent book 'Guns, Germs, and Steel', priests appear in all societies when they reach a certain size and complexity. They are needed to justify the kleptocracy needed by all large centralized governments, i.e. taxes.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.For those interested, there is also a reference to this in Ronald Wright's fantastic short book A Short History of Progress, a compilation of lectures he gave a few years ago. It was also made into a film called Surviving Progress which I think should be mandatory viewing for the 1% who govern us so terribly.
