It all began in 1917 when a KY coal miner asked our traveling salesman for a snack “as big as the moon.” Earl Mitchell reported back and the bakery obliged with a tasty treat aptly named MoonPie. It was filling, fit in the lunch pail and the coal miners loved it.
Chattanooga Bakery produced over 100 items but they knew they had something special with MoonPie. At 5¢ each, MoonPies were an affordable, filling snack that just flew off the shelves. By 1929, the factory was boxing up hundreds every day.
Best snack ever! Goes best with an RC
So they say. I'm not a big RC fan though.
Another yummy treat that is peculiarly American......hasn’t travelled from US UK. But don't worry we have equally fat and laden creations if our own!
@MrLizard Yum yum, aren’t you lucky!
I believe the whole Moon Pie episode was faked by the US Governme.......... Oh! That was the Moon Walk? Never mind.
The Moon Pie was a little before the 'faked' moon walk.
Recently they've returned to the original recipe, removing many dangerous chemicals and sweeteners.
I hadn't realized that they had ever changed the formula.
Just curious, were they the same back then as now? I love those things, but rarely eat sweets nowadays.
The originals still exist. They make a lot of different flavors as well now.
@MrLizard I can't say I like the single-deckers either, but I liked them when I was a kid.
