Okay share your disco stories. Here's one of mine. When disco started coming out I was of course in a rock band . Long hair rockin hippies! Anyways we (supposedly ha) hated disco music hence the term.DISCO SUCKS! My band did not know this and me of course teaching ballroom dancing when I was younger like to dance right? Well deep inside I liked disco music so Id sneak out after rehearsal or whatever and hit the Disco bars number one reason was because that's where all the The the girls went what girl does not like to dance? So Id go out and dance the night away with Disco pounding and fine Ladies....and man did I have fun! And scored!!! If those guys would have known that I was going out doing that I might not be here today! LOL.... DISCO SUCKS DISCO SUCKS!!!
I was in a rock & roll band then, too, and I hit the discos a few times, but most of that time I was already dating someone, so I didn't need to go find a woman. I still hate a lot of the disco.
I grew up in that era, an I still have to stick to my guns here and say I fucking hated disco.
Most of it was stollen from some great Funk bands, like the commadors, earth wind an fire, George Clinton and the parliment funkadelic,, and many more.
Alwaysy lovrd the funk, but I've alwayse hated disco.
I forgo to mention that disco also jacked R&B as well.
Here are a few examples of what I mean..
The first one is george clinton, who basickly invented funk.
The comodores. They hat some great hits, but Lionel took that and ran with the ball to make some amazing tunes.
The third one is Earth Wind and Fire. of all the things I would like to say about them. Nothing compaires ti Phillip Baileys falsetto. He is the best at that.
@TristanNuvo I believe it was James Brown who invented funk. But Clinton was right there soon afterward.
@tnorman1236 I think you are right, I toatally forgot about James Brown.
I wasn’t around for any of it but I gathered the opinion that disco sucked when I was delving into classic rock too. But then I fell in love with funk, and realized that disco and funk weren’t too far apart: it’s a little simpler rhythmically, not as much synchopation and focused more on the 4 on the floor rhythm. A few more string samples and strong female singers but that diva spirit was sort of the point. It’s simple glittery dance music meant for grooving and when I realized how important it was to the women’s and LGBTQ scene in New York I had a lot more respect for it. Its a form of the punk rock spirit really. Waving your freak flag n not giving a good goddamn or a rusty fuck what anyone has to say about it. And that spirit makes anything groovy, whether it be hip hop or outlaw country. Even the Grateful Dead wrote a funk/disco song.
I still love disco. My sister and I loved to dance; and we made sure the guys that danced with us got lots of loving. The ones that said Disco Sucks would sit pouting on the sidelines - and we noticed that when they played rock those guys wouldn't dance to it either. They wouldn't dance to anything but slow songs. I'm sure they turned into a bunch of grumpy hateful old men who still won't dance - their loss!
