I have always had a bug in my craw over this.
The Holocaust didn't kill 6 million jews. It killed at least 13 million and some estimates go to 17 million. But only the 6 million gets mentioned.
What is it that makes these 7 to 11 million lives so unimportant? Not just to the jewish people, but everyone else seems to wipe them away without a thought, too.
Figures lie, and liars figure. It's true in all areas of life.
It's better to freely acknowledge that six million perished, than to claim it's all a hoax, at least. Beyond a certain point, the sheer numbers are impossible to comprehend anyway.
I don't see it as a nefarious plot. It's just ignorance of history. For example, most people don't realize that the number of people who died in the concentration camps actually pales compared to the numbers that died before they were established, in places like Poland and Lithuania. The Germans had to invent new, production-line means of mass killings. They dug trenches and machine-gunned people into them. How many of those were Jews, how many were anti-Nazi partisans or Russians, I'm not sure, but your 13 to 17 million figure itself may not include those, because they tend to include estimates of the concentration camp genocide only.
None of the reasons given truly justify ignoring the horrible loss, whatever the number. The Nazi's cleaned both politically and ethnically not to mention reports of asylums and retirement homes being emptied.
And yes, other massacres are going unmentioned. That is disturbing too.
Probably because they only counted the white, upper class Jews.
