When will we see an Atheist US president?

I wonder at the silliness that gets bandied around politics, but honestly wouldn't we want someone who takes responsibility and doesn't just ask for prayer. Worst yet someone who just says they are and then acts immoral anyway. I don't mean someone who is to go to the dark side like Mark Zuckerberg but an open Atheist.

It would be nice, however republicans would never let it happen. They prefer Pence over any moderate republican such as McCain. They are so tied to religion it's funny.

It is funny if it it makes a meme or a good late night joke. They are going to start a war in Israel that we will have to fight. Not to mention that our progress is so slow now we are falling behind most of Europe. Laugh to keep from crying sort of thing.

I hope before I die! I believe we are going to see a resurgence of secularism in America.

We already are. I honestly think there are many of us out there, just waiting for "critical mass" to be more open about it.

I am 56 and I honestly do not think an "out" atheist President will happen in my lifetime. In fact, I'd be shocked if we even get a Senator!

It's easy, all you have to do is join the Christian Coalition Swear your allegiance to the KKK, Money Lobbyist the NRA and all of the others who could give a sh55t about you or ever did.

To be fair trump was an atheist until he decided to run for president and realized he could pick up the evangelical voters.

Never. If you believe Dawkins (which I do), the public trusts us about as much as they trust rapists (although the Catholics seem to trust rapists just fine).

I also do. Yet it bugs me that so many refer to the constitution, and yet:

U.S. Constitution (1787) Article VI, “[N]o religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

and yet...

We probably had a few already.

At least 20 years away from that. No openly atheist person could win right now.

Gary Johnson listed his religion as "Lutheran: Non-practicing"
I think he was/is pretty clearly an atheist...
I hope our next Libertarian candidate also is non-religious.

I think Trump is an atheist. I’m sure there have been others.

Not for a long time. We still have too many religious believers who would not be comfortable with that.

3

I am sure we have already had more than one. They just couldn't admit it.

Religion has too much of a financial stronghold on politics, which is a shame because an atheist president might actually make these religions pay their fair share of tax.

I would bet being atheist would block the person from running. It doesn’t fit the sleazy political mold.
