I’m British ours don’t have them there. We call ours trolleys and they have one hook further up which I hang the “bag for life” on! This is a large strong canvas or woven plastic bag that costs about 50p to buy and you keep bringing it back with you each time you shop. If you don’t bring your own bag with you the shops now charge for supplying plastic bags...5p or 10p depending on the size. This is a green policy to cut down on plastic waste.
I guess you're talking about the hooks on the grocery cart? Not all carts have them and they're only sort of useful and only after you've checked out. I don't use them. An engineer that was collecting way too much money and never went shopping a day in his life designed them.
So of course I didn't learn this until after they did away with plastic bags for groceries in California.
They haven't completely done away with plastic bags, it is just that they have gone to heavier duty, reusable bags. By state law they have to charge you $0.10 per bag.
That initiative passed the same day as the one legalizing pot.
One of my friends observed, "I guess that officially makes California the dime bag state."
@Sheannutt, I bring my own. I usually keep most of the collection in the car so I can just grab one when I run into the store. I think I may have spent $0.20 on bags so far. I know I spent a dime a couple of weeks ago because the store was running specials on grapes ($0.88/lb) and a couple of other things I didn't have on my list. I ended up buying way more than would fit in the bag I brought in with me.
They already charge for bags in parts of Washington.
That's a great idea. Plastic bags (one use) should be outlawed.
Uhhh....the day before my 43rd birthday.
