I'm not sure how eloquent these posts should be, but here goes: I've been watching old star trek and there are a disturbing number of episodes where Kirk is singing praises of an omnipotent monotheistic god. There was an episode with a theory about polytheism and he said, "not the TRUE god." And when Doctor McCoy was like, "I never met a god before." Jim said, "You still haven't" what the hell ???
I take most things from TOS with a grain of salt as I find they don't always translate to the rest of the series anyhow. Religion certainly still exists all over the place throughout Star Trek though, so it's not completely ridiculous to think that Kirk still holds some vestiges of a monotheistic religion. Habits can be hard to break, case in point is the colloquialism that you used to end your question.
It is entertainment reflective of the time they were filmed. A couple of nods to a supreme being got you browny points with the believers without acknowledging a direct religious connection. Sadly, I think we are headed back that way if you look at new shows coming out this fall. The funniest one is the one where God is sending text messages to a young man who was having doubts about his faith. This is why I delete messages from unknown phone numbers! ?
What amazes me if when people ask if I have ever watched "Lucifer." WTF? A TV show where the devil is a cop. Why would I waste my time?
