Cycles. cycles everywhere ...but not a single one to ride.
There is compelling evidence that the Netherlands is the country with the highest rate of bicycle ownership/usership ... but when it comes to sheer numbers ... Hardly any country can beat China ... perhaps India.
Although the roads of modern China are clogged with more than 100 000 000 million cars they are outnumbered by several hundred million bicycles.
In the last 4 years the cycling scene has seen some dramatic shifts with share bikes being ubitquitous.
This rather brilliant idea, which should be extended to buckets (more on that later) has led to some drastic and proabably unexpected consequences. These dockless vehicles have turned into a nuisance in many places and Chinese cities.
Also it appears that the refund, or rather lack thereof, of the bond has become a major source of frustration which might explain bike rage and vandalism. Physical effort is used to through bicycles into water courses and onto piles of ailing bicycles.
