Who'd have thought that just when the free press is under attack from all sides that my local paper would decide slash it's wrists.

Yesterday the Billings Gazette sent my annual subscription bill stating that $151.27 would buy me up to 52 weeks of daily news paper. The bill did not specify what up to means. So I called. It turns out the Gazette randomly sends out unsolicited "suplements" for which they charge undisclosed fees of $5 or so. Without notice these fees are subtracted from the "up to" yearly subscription rate. As far as I can tell this practice cost me something like 12 weeks of news last year.

So does one trust the news presented by an outlet using clearly deceptive practices? If you get a newspaper do you know whether or not you are getting screwed? Does anyone know how to get state & local print news from a more reliable source?

The Des Moines (Iowa) Register made the same announcement and much as I feel the need to support the local newspaper, I felt this was going to far so I cancelled my subscription, and it was the on line subscription.

I would rather get it on my computer.

I dunno..I switched to reading my local Morehead News newspaper online years before I moved to Thailand in 2010. I can still read it online any time I wish.
