Also, just to mention, when the 747 first entered service, the upper deck area was a lounge/bar area. Now, it has seats instead of the grand piano and bar for people to stretch their legs and get a drink on those long haul flights.
While this is just a mock up of a potential cabin layout, it really isn't all that far from the truth. The seats were bigger back then and you had more leg room. It wasn't until the fuel prices started to soar higher and higher that things began to change. The profit margin for an airline is actually very small so a difference of a few passengers can make or break a flights profitability. Hence the smaller seats and less legroom. Also, with the rising fuel costs, you started to see some key points of service being taken away. You can't get a deck of cards anymore, the in-flight snack has been significantly reduced if not removed all together, and the drink portions have been reduced if not removed all together. The airlines are no longer competing with service but with lower ticket prices. The industry, in my opinion, was never ready for deregulation. The major carriers had massive salaries and, prior to deregulation, they could pass on the increase in costs to the customer. After deregulation, they couldn't do that anymore. The market was flooded with new, low cost carriers that were putting a strain on the majors. The major carriers where convinced that the government would realize that they made a mistake and return things to normal. They went on massive expansion campaigns to gain access to as many markets as they could so that when things returned to normal, everything would be grandfathered in. It never happened and the major carriers have been struggling with their high costs ever since. While a low cost carrier can do very well in certain markets and can actually thrive, the major carriers still have there size as an advantage and the ability to absorb losses in certain markets where they feel they are being threatened and will use predatory practices to drive the low cost carrier out of the market or to the point where the low cost carrier is in such a bad position that it gets bought out by the major carrier. Since 1978, we have gone from around 7 or 8 major carriers to just 3 or 4. Fuel price is a critical cost for every airline no matter the size.
sorry to be a party pooper [gizmodo.com.au]
You could be right. One never knows these days.
I believe the article is right. I have flown dozens of times. Never had anywhere close to that luxury. Hell, they won't even give you a meal anymore! They give you a small ass bag of peanuts that probably costs 5 cents. Might get half a soda.
@TheGreatShadow, @Slava3 I swear they were better in the '70s tho. More spacious, more treats, better service.
@MsDemeanour Things have changed. Seinfeld had a skit about airplanes. I don't know if I could eat all these peanuts. IT'S SUCH A BIG BAG!
@TheGreatShadow yeah I saw that lolol
@MsDemeanour IMHO that is probably the funniest sitcom ever!
@TheGreatShadow They've taken everything away because of fuel costs. Back in the 70s and 80s and even the early 90s fuel prices were very low. Fuel costs is any airline's biggest expense. If you reduce the weight of the aircraft, you burn less fuel thus saving money. It sucks that flying isn't what it used to be. I miss the glory days of flying. But those days are gone.
@TheGreatShadow, @MsDemeanour They were better, for passengers that is. Fuel costs weren't what they were like today. The airlines had to compete based on service instead of price. And, yes, they didn't pack the people in like they do now. You actually had decent leg room.
@TheGreatShadow yes it is certainly up there. And it's the greatest American sitcom. my fav will always be One Foot in the Grave. The show about nothing way before Seinfeld. I recall one episode shot entirely in the couple's bedroom; with the old guy up and down whinging about the party next door. The old guy was absolute parody of my grumpy dad. But hey I'm a lover of Brit humour.
@MsDemeanour I'll give it a look. I love brit humor. If you haven't watched it, check out The IT Crowd, Father Ted, or How Not To Live Your Life. The IT Crowd makes me laugh hard!
@TheGreatShadow yes ive seen all those except How not to live your life. yes love the IT crowd and Father ted. Another classic is The Worst Week of My life. Only three episodes I think.
@MsDemeanour Yeah Brit shows are aired far less per season that a lot of american ones. For example The Big Bang might have 24 episodes in a season. Lots of brit shows tend to have 6.
I have watched the IT Crowd 3-4 times for every episode. Still makes me laugh! I did rewatch Father Ted (both shows are written by the same guy). How Not To Live you life isn't nearly as funny, and I tried to rewatch. Got bored.
