Do you say coo-pahn or q-pahn? Milk or melk? Pillow or pellow?
Is the first one supposed to be "coupon?"
yes
Was going to ask this too. I had no idea what a "coo-pan or q-pan" was.
Edited to make more sense. It was late.
I'm not really sure if I say coo-pon or q-pon, I think I probably use both. Milk for sure. And I used to say pellow, but I started noticing that and didn't like it, so now I say pillow probably 80%-90% of the time.
40 years in Northern Ohio: q-pawn, milk, pillow, rewtbeer, ruff for roof, pee-can not pacon (pecan), car-mel not caramel, strawbury not strawberry, I'm sure theres more . . .
The first of each pair. Do you think it's regional or related to social class or something else?
I imagine regional.
I have lived and traveled all over the U.S. and the world for that matter. All the different accents I experienced were definitely geographical or regional.
@marksam8484 In England the social classes are often recognizable by their accents...
@Carin Aren't they typically living in different geographical locations also?
@marksam8484 Some like cockney & Liverpool. But not all.
Coo-pawn, melk, pellow. I have an unplaceable speech pattern, I've been told.
I've been told I sound both southern and northern.
I speak English so I say milk and pillow.. not sure what the other even is.. ?
More importantly: do you say ah'ern or eyeron. Having a slight twang, I say ah'ern (iron). I'm actually interested in how dialects in other states say "iron". Also i say coopawn, milk, and pillow.
N. Ohio: eyern
I was taught in school that I-run instead of iron was just a mispronunciation.
I say coo-pahn, milk, pillow...
While we're on the subject... Do you guys call it soda, pop, or a Coke?
Pop
Coke. But when I go to a restaurant, I ask if they have coke or Pepsi. I don't assume when I ask for a Coke, they won't try to give me Pepsi. Gag me.
I call it soda but I've heard people ask for a Coke, then when the server asks "what kind?", they specify and say "Dr. Pepper" or whatever...
Soda.
Diet soda. It’s either coke or Pepsi. Prefer coke but I’ll drink the Pepsi if that’s all they have.
