Last night was a blast! By blast I mean nightmare.

I occasionally stay at my mom or dad's house. In the beater the dash lights don't work, so I need to get off the road before dark. My dads place is 8 miles closer than my house from my moms. It was starting to get too dark, so I just stayed at his place.

About 3 AM I couldn't sleep, so I was trying to watch a movie. There was a commercial, so I was going down in the basement to look for something. 1/4" of water covering the entire floor! His basement is massive. I tried calling his cell. It was off. Called my mom and told her to wake his ass up and get over here ASAP. He has a geothermal HVAC system. I thought it was leaking from there. It's done it several times, but NEVER anywhere close to this!

He grabbed a wet vac. I got roughly 60 gallons of water out before it crapped out. Did next to nothing to make a dent. He said to shut off the main water valve. We went down to check it out, and a water line burst! Went to shut off the main. Couldn't get it to move by hand. Had to use vice grips to move. Once closed, the valve didn't work. Found another shutoff. Had a hard time getting it to move by hand (this was a lever type, not a screw type like for garden hoses). I had to use brute force. Fucking handle did break off. Luckily first thing this morn he was able to get a plumber to fix it. God this caused a lot of damage! His basement is something like 2500 sq ft!

It is a damn good thing I stayed there instead of going to my house!

You gotta love old trick cars. Hope they have insurance to cover that much damage!!! What a mess!

Dealing with unexpected water damage can be a nightmare. It's fortunate you were there to help out. On a side note, after a situation like that, it might be a good idea to ensure everything's back in order, including checking on air quality to prevent any potential issues. You can find some useful resources on managing indoor environments at [cleanairuk.co.uk] , including a Legionella log book that might come in handy for situations like this.
