I was brought up as a Spiritualist but never believed in a god so was always an Atheist but did believe in life after death, higher purpose etc. Now regard myself an Anti-theist/Atheist. Never preach but love to debate the subject. Nothing but contempt for Religions and those who preach it but I understand why people think they believe. Purpose and meaning in THIS life, here and now is what matters.

A big part of folks on this site have come out of religious backgrounds and understand why people "think they believe" as you put it. I really did believe and it took a long time to come to the realization that the belief that I had was grounded in BS.

Indeed. I also really believed and remember clearly my justifications at the time. I realise now it was wish thinking, fear of loss, fear of pointlessness. Admitting you were wrong after years, right from childhood, of being convinced is a huge thing. The feeling of disappointment took it's toll on me and it takes enormous courage to be that honest with yourself and those who know you. I don't feel foolish for what I believed in because I understand WHY I believed it. It also means I now understand why people still believe even against all reason.
