How can supposed religious teachers not know even the basics of other large religions or atheism, or even important sects within their own religion? My daughter spent a year at La Salle before transferring. And La Salle in Philadelphia is considered a pretty good, albeit Jesuit college. As a freshman she had to take a religion course (she got an A). However, when the "Prof" said I think we are all Christians here, she raised her hand. The religious expert had no idea what an Unitarian is. Yes, it is now a small denomination, which used to be Christian and many founding fathers were members, take that evangelicals, and Harvard theological school was and still is Unitarian. How does one get a job like that at a respected college? Sure at an evangelical HS or at Liberty University. Or even a Catholic HS. But else where?
When it comes to parochial schools, “religious teachers” may be too religious to be of good use. The best comparative religion teachers are often well-versed, secular nonbelievers, who are able to understand religion as mythology, view the so-called holy books as fiction, and willing to identify repeated and overlapping themes.
