Getting honest and useful statistics from any agency of the government is a challenge in India. However, the article above states that the Japanese research found in 2006 that 6.6% of Indians stated that they had no religion.

Atheists are labeled and looked upon as social outcasts in the society. People are not just religious but very superstitious. It will be hard to hear someone saying openly that he or she is an atheists.

India's 86% people of the total 1.4 billion population is religious. Over 97% charity goes directly to religion while schools, hospitals, orphanages, women's shelters are either non existent or in poor state across the country.

India's biggest problem that it must fight is not lack of education or poverty. It is the false pride that is cultivated by the local culture and ruling parties for 70 years since independence. Most people don't really know where India stands in worldwide rankings in most good categories.

That's a sad thing. Same situation with me. The reason isn't just fear. If we are being realistic, we all know that Indian males enjoy male privilege regardless of their religion or beliefs. The game of males in India is with higher difficulty and at higher level most of the times. Freedom restriction is what makes females weak. They are usually treated much sensitively than men. Another reason for weakness. As a atheist myself, what worked for me is psychological play than intimidating others. I took a lot of pain, getting beat up by mob, being harassed and made fun of. It took 16 years of my life to become a perfect lone wolf rogue survivor. It wasn't necessary for me to experience them all if I had smart and supportive parents. In India, game of females is set to be soft. It makes them weak. Regardless of gender, people love their parents however they are. It's a bitter truth but if you don't kick your toxic parents or (family members) then there's nothing you could do after point. I use psychological techniques and maintain my relationship with parents just so that I could develop. They abuse me and my wrath is unbearable. Humiliating. I make them cry. I show them the pain. Whatever you may think of me, I don't care. They abuse me for what I am and my unwillingness to change into their way. And I am not a fucking slave to bear all that shit. If I didn't have male privilege, I would be shit. Then I would have not let them know about me and once I become settled in life, I would have started a war. Luckily, as I am a male I don't get treated sensitively and so won't have to face the consequences of sensitive lives.

I have met numerous Indian atheists over the years. Good luck in your quest to make connections.

I imagine there are plenty of female atheists in India, but they feel less able to express opinions that might be met with opprobrium in that society.
