Which scientists were atheist. Or no Gods believer?
More relevant to Christian fundamentalists ... there are even more scientists who believe in an impersonal god or some sort of pantheism than just the ones who disbelieve in any gods. But they often claim the deists and pantheists as believers -- as if those guys would not be rejected from membership in their own churches on account of believing the Wrong Things.
Yeah that's not the case at all:
'A survey of scientists who are members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press in May and June 2009, finds that members of this group are, on the whole, much less religious than the general public.'
Among U.S. scientists, those that are religious are far more likely to be Christians than anything else. Note that this survey was carried out in the U.S. and isn't representative of religious beliefs of scientists worldwide. Scientists in the U.S. are far more likely to believe in deities.
There’s always some more vocal than others, just like us. Stephen Hawking, Alfred Nobel, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and her husband, Neil Degrasse Tyson identifies as an agnostic. There is many more.. those are the ones I can think of right now.
I hope other folks have some names.. and maybe some quotes to back them up. But the question is like asking ‘which US presidents were Atheists?’ If you ‘admit’ such a thing, funding and support dries up… I suspect many were, but had they admitted it, they’d never have become president..
I believe there were threats against the life of Charles Darwin … Galileo was locked up by ‘the church.’ In the US, religious fanatics cut funding to science whenever possible, so if the scientist in charge had proclaimed their Atheism.. funding would likely be non existent ….unless their research had military applications..
"If you ‘admit’ such a thing, funding and support dries up…"
Perhaps in the U.S.A., but not here in Australia.
