Not only the river and the majesty of the land that it runs through, but the wildlife that is disappearing is a huge blow to the environment. It is so very sad that we, as humans can be so short sighted, worrying about our limited lives over the next decade while we ruin the world around us for millennia.

And there is no way to recover from that. Once they are gone they are gone forever.

This happened to the Colorado River long ago. There are simply too many of us in these dry states. We've been running a water deficit for a century or more. Deep out of sight, aquifers have emptied & collapsed. Aquifers refill on a geological time scale & once collapsed will never regain that capacity, so they are as good as gone to us. The only options are desalinization for coastal areas, eventually, & reducing population.
