Although, I was thinking about getting a cat, and the lady at the shelter told me the same thing about them... they come off as independent, but they, too, need company. She told me that if I planned to be gone a lot, consider getting two cats so they could keep each other company.

I'd really love a cat or a dog, but I'm so worried that I won't be a good enough parent I can't bring myself to get one. I've got two plants: Bamboo and Aloe... both have been alive for years, but I keep them in the window and water them once a week. That won't work with dogs or cats.

@Benthoven We have two cats, and they do let us know when they want attention from us, but mostly they are content to be independent. Of course even though we wanted to have indoor cats, the cats had other ideas and so they go in and out. Cats also sleep 12-16 hours a day, which means they don't need as much attention.

Our next door neighbors have a dog, which they leave out in the yard and never pay attention to it. What is worse is tht it is a border collie, which is a breed that tends to like human company. We feel sorry fo that dog. I had that dog in mind when I talked about hwo you need to have time to give a dog attention if you get one.

I agree cats do need attention, but cats are happy and content to sleep 12-16 hours a day, or to just watch birds fomo a window. Dogs, in order to be happy need peopel to engage with it a great deal more than a cat does. You seldom hear people describign a dog as being "aloof", but people often say that about cats.

My sister and I were brought up with both dagos and cats. We just prefer cats, because they are content with our tiem constraints and the amoutn of attention we are available to give them.. and dogs dotn' crwl into your lkap and start purring while your reading a book.
