Rough week. My heart hurts for the children this week.
I'll open by putting out there that I'm NOT a nurturing person despite my career working with disabled kids. I provided strategies and solutions that work long-term, not temporary feel good moments. Though there are plenty of feel good moments in the application of my strategies.
But, this weekend just drove home how badly we as a society are failing our children. Our education system sucks because its about passing and graduating versus learning. I can't go into details, but I had a young girl who was perfectly willing to sabotage her own outcome just to prove a point and hurt another girl.
So many kids are lacking basic life and academic skills; yet, they keep getting passed on and falling further behind. Teachers are pressed to show results by a test score and parents are being lead around by their children instead of being in charge of the family. Too many children are getting what they want instead of what they need.
I try my best to make a difference. I hope its working.
I totally agree with you. Things need to drastically change. We definitely need to overhaul our education system and focus on the learning and not the test scores. We are not doing ourselves any favors be allowing this to keep happening.
You have a tough but important job. It seems like kids are already behind when they start kindergarten. I volunteered in my kids' classrooms for years & I KNOW when I was in Kindergarten (never mind how long ago) I never saw students hit or swear at teachers.... Teachers can't raise people's kids for them, but it almost seems to be expected of them.
