Interesting. Now I suspect this is the origin of the name of the Seneca Crane character in the Hunger Games.

This could have been an early clue talking snakes on a woman's head, Wonder who stole the talking snake idea. Thing so fantastic and were never question really makes you wonder.

I totally agree. Religion is the opiate of the masses. It keeps the masses compliant and quiet to be exploited.

How did Seneca manage to live to such an age whilst espousing such thoughts? Presumably the news did not, like a good beer or wine, travel.

Perhaps "common" and "wise" had different connotations back then? But, there is a core of truth there. Maybe change common to ignorant; and wise to informed. The rest can stand.

Rulers use religion to control their subjects. The Church was always instrumental in royal life.
