American Humanist Association
Dear Friends,
Thandie Newton is a force to be reckoned with. Last Sunday at the 2018 Emmy Awards, she was awarded Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role as Maeve in HBO’s Westworld. During her acceptance speech, I was thrilled when I heard her say, “I don’t believe in God, but I’m going to thank her tonight.”
Thandie’s simple statement of gratitude during her acceptance speech was almost immediately attacked by many― including Piers Morgan. During a discussion he said, “Seriously atheists, keep your big noses out of it. … Shut up. Honestly, it's ridiculous... Nobody cares."
thank_thandie_600.jpgIt’s outrageous that, with nearly one quarter of Americans no longer identifying with a religious tradition, nontheists are still being shamed and people with influence continue to fuel the myth that religious Americans are more moral, patriotic, and charitable than nontheists.
It’s time for us to come together and make our voices heard so that our encouragement drowns out the haters!
Take action now for Thandie and all nontheists. Show your support on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by adding our #ThankThandie profile picture frame or taking a picture of yourself with the hashtag #ThankThandie.
The American Humanist Association is only as strong as its community of members, and the need for strong humanist communities in the United States has never been greater. A humanist world—a world of reason, compassion, and equality—is a world I want to live in, and I know you agree. Together, we can make it happen.
Sincerely,
