Today I went to my neighbors baby shower. I always hate these types of things, but I have known this person her whole life and wanted to be a good neighbor. When I got there and sat down it was just like every other baby shower, with the cheesy games and awkward small talk. Then things took a turn, lol. Suddenly my neighbors mother inlaw shushed everyone so she could say grace. This is not something I have ever encountered at a baby shower, but I figured it would be a quick 30 second grace and then on to cake and coffee. Well this woman went into a 10 minute full evangelical grace. I was trying to patiently wait for it to end, because this woman would NOT stop talking! Then a thing happened. This older woman at the next table started to have a very loud conversation with the woman seated next to her, right in the middle of what was now becoming a sermon in disguise. The lady saying grace finally stopped and loudly shushed the woman who was talking over her, to which the woman replied "hey this is your thing not mine". Grace was quickly wrapped up, and that woman is now my hero.

You meet fellow atheists in the most interesting ways!

Although she may not be an unbeliever, just a less insane believer.

For the record, I'm a former evangelical, and a 10 minute-plus prayer would be considered ass-hattery even by most evangelicals. It's just that so many evangelicals would sit through it because they're so conditioned to not "make waves".

Good on her!
I'll remember that retort next time someone tries to involve me in religious ritual nonsense.

"Hey this is your thing not mine!"

What a great motto, and my new reply to the imposition of religion, whether by individuals, public policies or laws, in our daily lives!
