Anybody else familiar with the story of the Catholic / Orthodox schism? Years ago, I read a story about how the Catholics wanted Rome to be the seat of church, but the Orthodox wanted it in Constantinople. A group of Orthodox clergy grabbed what was believed to be the cross Jesus was crucified on and beat feet to the North. Catholics got wind of this and had them hunted down and killed. Not sure when this supposedly happened, but I think it was between 800 and 1000. Think I first saw the story when reading a book on the history of the Templar Knights and thought it was interesting stuff, but now that I'm looking for more information, I'm at a loss.
Thanks

I'm not that familiar with it, but as I recall it was more a political power struggle than it was a religious conflict. The every day layperson probably didn't care, at least initially. The destruction of Knights Templar is a subject that I have read about extensively, but this came suddenly on October 13, 1307 (it was a Friday). The East-West schism to which you refer occurred centuries earlier.
