I will let you know that I work for a national lender. I have worked in the financial field for 30 years. I can tell you that they are dangerous. Have they done some good? Perhaps. They have brought a new level of awareness to the public... But they are dangerous.
They aren't funded by the government, they are funded by the fines they levy on financial institutions. They drawn many of their conclusions, in part, by guess-work... Specifically in the way they penalize lenders for the rates they charge.
