Do you feel you have a responsibility to the nation? I mean not just a general wish to do the right thing by the world and it’s people, but an actual feeling of accountability to the town you live in, your country, and so on.
I've grown up in and have always lived in the poorer communities of our nation. I've always held a job and taken care of my family and community to the best of my ability: neighborhood crime watch, meals for neighbors who have none, block parties to gather and support each other, donations to community women's shelters, shoveling snow or yardwork for elderly or handicapped in the community. As far as the Nation goes . . . I've paid more then my far share of taxes.
Absolutely. I have a responsibility to work in order to keep the wheels of commerce in motion, pay my taxes to fund the government and participate in the political process. And in return, when I reach the age of 65 and am in my declining years and I have put in my time doing all of those things, I expect to have my country return the favor by providing for my needs as my health fails and I become less and less able to fulfill these obligations.
Ahum... yeah... that seems likely
If I came into possession of a massive quantity of money tomorrow I wouldn't donate a drop to Planned Parenthood, even though I want them to succeed, or any other big name, national cause. I'd start at home. I'd make sure the local Boys and Girls club had enough money, I'd make sure the library wasn't an embarrassment, the schools weren't falling over, etc etc.
So that's a long way of saying yes. I think sustained national improvement starts on the local level.
I think we should be good citizens and obey the laws of the land we live in. The alternative is anarchy. If we don’t like either the local or national politicians we should do our best to elect better ones. We also, as citizens of the world, should be concerned about what is happening in other countries too. We are all interconnected as human beings on this earth and should try our best to look after each other and make sure we are not destroying the planet. We are only temporary custodians here on earth and we must never forget that.
No, I can’t say I have much feeling of responsibility to any political abstraction such as nation or state, though I do, as you suggest, wish to do the right thing. My feelings of responsibility are toward human kind and other living creatures. I don’t much care what town or country they’re from.
Thinking, on the other hand, is a somewhat different matter. At this point in time I still think it’s a good thing to try to carry my share of the civic load, but I confess that responsibility doesn’t bear upon my feelings as much as my sense of responsibility directly to my fellow humans does.
The abstraction that I relate to at the feeling level is more generally “culture” than specifically “politics”. I’m glad there are people who are better at that than I am. It’s yet another thing I feel I have little talent for. I try to stay informed. I vote. That’s about it.
That’s an interesting distinction. The feeling is what comes from inside, the thinking is what has been imposed on you by parents, teachers and other cultural figures of authority. I’ve always acted from a confused mix of both, and it is only now that I’m thinking seriously about it and trying to make a distinction.
I have to admit I’m wary of letting ‘responsibility’ dictate too much of my thinking or actions. In many ways that is a never ending treadmill, which removes all freedom from your life when taken to an extreme. The question is how to find a sensible balance.
@Denker
Like the advice at the beginning of each flight, put your own oxygen mask on first before trying to assist your child. I think this reasoning holds up when applied to more general responsibilities too. We have to find our own balance before we can fulfill responsibilities in a balanced way... no matter how long it takes. My opinion is that the authentic motivation for meeting responsibilities comes (eventually) from inside also.
Alienating forces imposed from outside are almost by definition some flavor of tyranny. And even while some tyrannies are unavoidable (you absolutely may not murder, steal, etc. no matter what your insides tell you) most tyrannies should be seen as unnecessarily oppressive, and evaded as a matter of principle.
Every individual doesn't have to be proficient at every task. I tend to think we're all better off if each of us has full freedom to seek his/her own personal equilibrium and develop whatever unique natural talents we may possess before we go worrying about group responsibilities.
When you have generated enough balance and orientation to meet your own rightful needs, then they will naturally overflow as voluntary contributions of balance and orientation to your wider circles, instead of feeding them your confusion out of an unfounded sense of obligation.
yes of course. that is why i encourage people to register and vote, and share information about what obstacles they might encounter and how to conquer them, and where to register and vote, and of course i vote myself, and purvey information about what the candidates are doing and what problems need to be solves, so that people may make informed choices. i am unable to get out and knock doors; if i could do that, i certainly would. i have been known to contact government officials to let them know how i feel about an issue or two, and once in a while attend a political meeting.

My County, state and country are all important to me. The world as a whole is also... But hard to make an impact globally.
It starts with voting! If you don't vote, you have no right to bitch about anything. I do not vote for my own self interests... I vote for who I feel the country needs or, as is getting to be the case more and more often... The lesser of two evils. Regardless... You MUST VOTE!
I have volunteered at the polls a few times... I always donate to my local Volunteer Fire & Rescue. I recycle just about everything as it turns out. (When I started years ago I was surprised!) I am a good steward of the land and area that I live in. I have A LOT of great hardwood on my 12 acres... But it stays where it is!
Your question is an interesting one and has brought back feelings, upon reflection, of childhood, the Pledge of Allegiance and other stuff I am not sure they even do anymore. Heck, they were doing the "Duck and cover" the first few years I was in school as we all grew up with the thought that the USSR was going to bomb us at any moment. It was definitely and US -VS- THEM mentality.
I'm looking at the future and I ain't seein' the Jetsons... More like Idiocracy. (Just watch the first 5 minutes to get my point!)
