Jesus Said!

There would be very few, if any of the great unwashed who would doubt the actual existence of one Alexander the Great. Certainly no actual historians doubt his existence and achievements. They are well documented and the evidence is overwhelming. Now as the head of a massive conquering army, and associated hangers-on (cooks, animal handlers, etc.), Alex would have needed a heck of a lot of scribes to take down all of his orders, instructions, strategies and related in order to pass them on up and down the line of the ranks and files. Now, that said, can you name me one "Alexander the Great said" quotes? Probably not - they hardly exist. Or take Cleopatra VII, yes that Cleo. Cleopatra VII was the Pharaoh / Queen of the entire ancient Egyptian empire. There should be lots and lots of "Cleopatra said" quotes, after all rulers have to do a lot of dictation, but alas, not so much. Yet, Jesus who existed later on down the line historically and yet who was a very minor figure in this own time - unlike Alex and Cleo - has hundreds of "Jesus said" quotes to his credit. Now something is clearly screwy somewhere. Since Alex and Cleo exist on the historical record, any screwy-ness has to be on the side of Jesus. That screwy-ness is easily resolved if one just admits that all of the "Jesus said" dialogs and monologs are just the inventions of the human imagination. Nobody really has a clue what Jesus said, even if one acknowledges the existence of an actual historical (but mortal) Jesus.

Some More of What Jesus Said!

Now here's some pretty solid evidence the New Testament, just like the old, is a total fabrication - a work of fiction, or rather perhaps the world's first anthology of fantasy stories. Now in the New Testament (Matthew 4: 1-11; Luke 4: 1-13) we find Jesus going walkabout in the wilderness for 40 days and nights. I might have been more impressed if it had been for 39 days and nights or 41 days and nights, but another Biblical 40 is just so unoriginal, but that's another topic. Anyway, Jesus didn't totally lack for company, as he and the Devil had a bit of a chin-wag. Quotes are quoted regarding their conversation. Now, did the Devil act as a scribe for Jesus; did Jesus act as a scribe for the devil? Who was taking notes and recording this verbal interaction? The odds are there were no pens and pencils put to paper out there in the wilderness, so there can be no exact quotations of the Jesus-Devil exchange. That suggests that someone somewhere made it all up out of whole cloth, just as the characters in novels have conversations given in quotation marks.

Wouldn't it be cool to know how many times Jesus said "oh god oh god oh god" when with Mary?

I hope you are not looking for an argument, but assume you are just looking for affirmation.

@johnprytz You are trying to pin down an unknown. What they claim Jesus said is immaterial if we don’t believe he even said them in the first place,

A manager I worked for was also a pastor. I asked him why only Cain & Abel were mentioned as the direct children of Adam & Eve. He said they had other children, yet none of them are worthy of mention. Seriously? Unless you kill someone, nobody cares about you? Tough crowd! And where did Cain & Abel find wives? Did God create other people equally unworthy of discussion as Cain's other siblings?

The bible does say Cain married his sister, no name given. And Seth was another son. Still a pretty low gene pool.

I enjoyed every word. The "Jesus said" idea gets worse when you order a bible with the words of Jesus in red. They call it a "red letter edition." How in the hell would anyone know the words of Jesus?

I'm so amazed at the biblical depiction of the baptism of Jesus. Did they proclaim him god right after that event? If there were witnesses did they all run away in fear or did they go somewhere to report the event?
