What are some of the most/least religious countries or places you've visited? Would you not want to visit a place because of the reported level of religiosity?
I have visited a number of countries where Islam is the main religion including Jordan, Egypt,Morocco and Israel.I have been met with openness and tolerance throughout as long as a I steer clear of even mild criticism of the religious or political hierarchy save for Israel . Here I could say and write anything but would add that I did not go out of my way to offend but attempted at all times to engage rather than alienate.Blunt speaking is fine for Western audiences but consideration must be given for those who may face persecution in less tolerant states where simply attending an event that criticises the majority religion is dangerous.
I've been thinking about places to re-locate outside the US and was strongly considering Ghana but discovered a very high level of religiosity to the point where atheists don't feel safe revealing their non-belief because they may be physically threatened and are likely to be shunned. Don't know if I could remain silent in this sort of atmosphere. Europe is much better, generally, but also a bit cold and expensive. I'm certainly not rich!
I think the most overtly religious place I ever visited was Turkey, what with the constant caterwauling from minarets and all. But they seemed happy to take my $$ even if they were probably perceived as infidel or Christian dollars. Three weeks of it was enough and I was ready to leave. Nice place to visit but wouldn't want to live there. (Ironically I considered taking a contract in Istanbul back in the nether regions of the previous century. It was fantastic money, but the client was RJ Reynolds tobacco so I turned it down. Even I have standards).
i suppose by virtue of having black-draped women in chairs all over the duty-free at the airport, glaring at me for not being black-draped, dubai is a tad too religious for me, but i don't want to visit there for real (outside the airport or even in it) for a variety of reasons besides that. the united states, where i live, is turning into an overly religious place for my taste and safety, too.
